Rolly is a co-production between FAB Productions and Mica Films. |
||||||||
Rolly originated in 1999 as an entry for a 1-minute screenplay competiton which funded one of Jim Flewitt's earlier works, Errol the Moron Goes Shopping. Jim later felt Rolly's story was incomplete and fleshed it out to the length seen in the film. Mike Hallett read the screenplay after meeting Jim at an Auckland screenwriters' group and offered to co-produce. It took some time to find a location with the spiral staircase central to the story, but the office of the Auckland Alzheimer's support group was ultimately hired and shooting took place in August 2004. |

There are several visual allusions to Roald Dahl's works in the film, such as this peach (James and the Giant Peach). We also had a globe positioned on Norway and some mice with spinning wheels but these never made it into the film. |

Rolly was well received on the festival circuit, appearing on the poster for the 2005 Belladonna Short Film Festival. This picture was taken at the 2005 Richmond Road Short Film Competition at Ponsonby's Richmond Road School in the heart of Auckland's film district. L-R: Mike Hallett (co-producer/1st AD), Jim Flewitt (writer/ director/co-producer), Sally Pugh (art design) and Marilyn Flewitt (location/catering) → Through a London film contact of Jim's we were invited to submit to the Halloween Short Film Festival, screening at the Curzon Theatre in Soho. |

| In 2009 Rolly was selected as course material by Western Springs College in Auckland, New Zealand. The Head of Media Studies described the film's appeal: |
||||||||
| "I’m interested in narrative... they get to make their own short films next term and this term are looking at a whole bunch of short films to learn about narrative. I’d like them to see yours because it’s a simple (and funny) idea, well executed. I’ve also been talking to them about building tension by cross-cutting between locations and this is a good example. Plus the sting in the tail." |
